I’m an honest Irish labourer and I come from the County Clare, And once I had a little farm with nothin' much to spare, But I had to sell me donkey and me little billy goat, And with the money I had left, To Glasgow took a boat, In the mornin' when I landed there, Before me hair was dry, I was started at the Micky Dam, In a place that they Milngavie (Mull-Guy), And the ganger that looked over us, They called him John the Mouse, And the very first day I started there, At me he bade to grouse, Well, I quickly did surprise him and I said "you little rat", "I'll tie a string around you're neck, I’ll toss you to the cat", Chorus:- For I'm as strong as any lion, I was reared on eggs and ham, I'm a terror to all fightin' men, Around the Micky Dam Well, this roused the mouse's temper, And at me he made to jump, And he swore he'd paralyze me, With the handle of a pump, But, I quickly did surprise him and I grabbed him by the throat, And I shook that ugly monkey, 'Til the tail fell off his coat, Chorus x2: For I'm as strong as any lion. I was reared on eggs and ham I'm a terror to all fightin' round the Micky Dam Well, them big hotels we're stopping in, They call them navvies huts, And the bugs and the fleas that live in the beds they’re big as coconuts, And on Saturday night, when I get rare, I’ll stand behind the door, And as they come out, one by one, I’ll bash them to the floor, Chorus x2: For I'm as strong as any lion. I was reared on eggs and ham I'm a terror to all fighten round the Micky Dam

T'was on one bright March morning I bid New Orleans adieu, And I took the road to Jackson town, Me fortune to renew, I cursed all foreign money, No credit could I gain, Which filled me heart with longin' for the Lakes of Pontchartain I stepped on board of a railroad car, Beneath the morning sun, And I rode the roads 'til evening and I laid me down again, All strangers they're no friends to me, 'Til a dark girl towards me came, And I fell in love with a Creole girl, From the Lakes of Pontchartrain, I said me pretty Creole girl, Me money here's no good, If it weren't for the alligators, I'd sleep out in the wood, You're welcome here kind stranger, Our house is very plain, But we never turn a stranger out, On the Lakes of Pontchartrain, She took me into her mammy's house, And she treated me quite well, The hair upon her shoulders, In jet black ringlets fell, To try and paint her beauty, I'm sure t'would be in vain, So handsome was my Creole girl, From the Lakes of Pontchartrain, I asked her if she'd marry me, She said this would never be, For she had got another, And he was far at sea, She said that she would wait for him, And true she would remain, 'Til he returned to his Creole girl, From the Lakes of Pontchartrain, So fair thee well me bonny old girl, May I never see you more, I'll ne'er forget your kindness, In the cottage by the shore, And at each social gathering, A flowin' glass I'll raise, And I'll drink a health to me Creole girl, From the Lakes of Pontchartrain

One evening for pleasure I rambled, On the banks of some cold purling stream, I sat down on a bed of primroses, And I gently fell into a dream, I dreamt that I saw a fair female, Her equal I ne'er saw before, And I sighed for the laws of our country, As we stray there on Ireland's Green Shore, Her cheeks were like two bloomin' roses, And her teeth were like ivory so white, Her eyes shone like two sparkling diamonds, Or the stars on some cold frosty night, She was dressed in the richest attire, And green was the mantle that she wore, All bound down with hemlocks and the roses, As we stray there on Ireland's green shore, Transgression of joy I awoken, I found this was only a dream, That pretty fair female had fled me, I longed to be slumbering again, May the heavens above be her guardian, Though I know I'll never see her anymore, May the goldiest sunbeam shine upon her, As she lay sleeping on Ireland's green shore, One evening for pleasure I rambled, On the banks of some cold purling stream, I sat down on a bed of primroses, And I gently fell into a dream.

Oh, there’s been a woman in our town, A woman you ought know well, She dearly loved her husband, And another man twice as well, CHORUS With me right finnickineerio, me tip finnick a wall, With me right finnickineerio, We’re tipping it up to Nancy, She went down to the chemist shop some remedies for to buy, Have you anything in your chemist shop to make me old man blind? CHORUS “Give him eggs and marrowbones and make him suck them all, Before he has the last one sucked, he won’t see you at all.” CHORUS She gave him eggs and marrowbones and made him suck them all, Before he had the last one sucked, he couldn’t see her at all. CHORUS If in this world I cannot see, here I cannot stay. I’d drown myself; “Come on,” says she, “and I’ll show you the way” CHORUS She led him to the river, she led him to the brim But sly enough of Martin, it was him that shoved her in. CHORUS She swam through the river, she swam through the brine “Oh Martin, dear Martin. Don’t leave me behind.” CHORUS “Oh Martin, dear Martin. Don’t leave me behind.” “Yerra shut up outa that ye silly aul fool, ye know poor Martin is blind” CHORUS There’s nine in me family and none of them is my own, I wish that each and every man would come and claim his own.
